Where Wild Beauty Blooms: A Texas Treasure Rooted in Legacy.

Just south of downtown Austin, about 3.5 hours away from Benbrook, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center stands as a living tribute to the vision of former First Lady Lady Bird Johnson and actress Helen Hayes. What began in 1982 as a mission to protect native plants has grown into one of the nation’s most respected botanical institutions.

Originally called the National Wildflower Research Center, the space was later renamed in honor of Johnson and now serves as a hub for environmental education, native plant conservation, and ecological research. With sprawling meadows, peaceful woodlands, and vibrant gardens open to the public, the center invites visitors to connect with Texas’ natural landscape in fresh and inspiring ways.

As part of the University of Texas at Austin since 2006, the Wildflower Center continues to make an international impact while offering an unforgettable experience right here in Central Texas.
