New COVID Variant Gains Ground in U.S. as Summer Wave Looms.

Benbrook residents, heads up. A new COVID-19 variant, dubbed NB.1.8.1 or “Nimbus,” is quietly picking up speed in the U.S. after fueling a recent resurgence in China and parts of Asia.

As of early June, this variant now accounts for about one-third of new COVID cases nationally.

While current data suggest that Nimbus is not more severe than earlier strains, it may be slightly more contagious and could partially evade immunity from vaccines or prior infections. That’s caught the attention of public health experts, especially with summer gatherings and travel on the rise.

Most people infected with Nimbus will likely experience common symptoms like congestion, fatigue, or a sore throat. But just like previous waves, those who are older or have chronic conditions remain at greater risk of serious illness or long COVID.

If you’re in a high-risk category, doctors say it might be wise to consider a booster now, even ahead of the new vaccine formulation expected this fall. And as always, basic precautions still help. That includes good ventilation, staying home if sick, and wearing a mask in high-risk indoor spaces.
