Some of the most familiar events at Benbrook’s VFW Post 10429, from Burger and Steak Nights to Run for the V and its Memorial Day tribute, have something simple in common: they need people willing to show up.
And according to Benbrook VFW & Auxiliary Post 10429, more people may be eligible to join than they realize.
For VFW membership, veterans or current service members must meet two requirements: qualifying honorable service in the U.S. Armed Forces and eligible service connected to a war, campaign, or expedition on foreign soil or in hostile waters.
That second requirement can include an authorized campaign medal, Hostile Fire or Imminent Danger Pay, or qualifying service in Korea.
For many veterans, the answer may already be on their DD-214. The Post recommends checking Block 13 or bringing the document by for help determining eligibility.
The door is wider for the VFW Auxiliary.
Men and women age 16 and older may qualify through an eligible spouse, parent, child, sibling, grandparent, or grandchild. Step, adopted, and half-family relationships also count. Those personally eligible for VFW membership would join the VFW rather than the Auxiliary.
Membership is not the only way to get involved. The Post also needs volunteers for food drives, community events, kitchen help, flag details, Run for the V, and other activities.
Not sure where you fit? Stop by VFW Post 10429 at 1000 Stevens Drive with your DD-214 or that of an eligible family member. They’ll help you sort through it.
And as the Post puts it, there’s no pressure. You might just discover you belong there after all.
