The Western Hills High School powerlifting team wasted no time making a statement in their first meet of 2026, opening the season with a strong showing at Diamond Hill and building on last year’s momentum.
On the girls’ side, Annabelle Rivas and Amali Angeles each claimed first place in their weight classes. Rivas posted a total of 475, while Angeles led the way with an impressive 575. Vivian Hernandez added to the success with a second-place finish and a 410 total.
The boys delivered big lifts across the board. Josh Oliver placed fourth in the 165 class with a 715 total. Josiah Pena turned in one of the night’s standout performances, winning the 220 class with a 1200 total.
In the 275 class, D’Shaun Elder earned third while Mauricio Martinez took first with a 1155 total. Christopher Ross made his meet debut count, finishing second in Super Heavy Weights with a 795 total.
Veteran lifter Josh Raga capped the night with a massive 1510 total, tying for first in the 242 class.
It was a confident start to the year for Cougar powerlifting, and the team is already focused on their next meet, which will be hosted at Western Hills next week.
