A beloved Benbrook tradition is back, thanks to longtime resident and retired USPS letter carrier Patrice Dempsey.
After 30 years of delivering mail, she spent every Christmas answering the Letters to Santa her office collected from neighborhood routes. Now retired, she continues that joy-filled work right from her front yard.
Patrice has set up Santa’s mailbox on Burkett Drive, complete with a candy cane flag that kids can raise to signal a new letter is ready for pickup. No stamp is needed. The North Pole covers that cost. Families need to include a return address so Santa can send a personal reply.
Parents and neighbors are cheering her on, calling it a sweet surprise and a bright spot in the season. Some plan to have their preschool classes participate. Others say they’ll happily slip in a stamp or two as a thank-you.
It’s a simple act of kindness, but one that keeps the magic alive. For many Benbrook families, this little mailbox is sure to deliver immense Christmas joy.
