Benbrook, Texas—In a heartfelt tribute to the heroes of the Vietnam War, a group of veterans—most notably helicopter pilot Doug Petersen from Benbrook, Texas—was recently honored for their extraordinary courage as part of the Dustoff crews.
These brave men were at the forefront of medical evacuations during the war, risking their lives every day to save the wounded. Petersen, who served as a Dustoff pilot, shared his intense experiences from the battlefield, including one harrowing mission where his crew was ambushed by enemy fire while rescuing a critically injured soldier. Petersen and his crew exemplified the true meaning of their mission—embodying the mantra “No man left behind.”
In recognition of their selflessness and bravery, the U.S. Congress recently awarded the Dustoff crews the prestigious Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian honor in the country.
