If your bathroom sink has started draining slower than usual or you’ve spotted mysterious brownish gunk backing up in the pipes, you’re in good company.
Several Benbrook homeowners have recently shared their experiences battling strange blockages. Some so thick and persistent they required a full teardown of the p-trap and beyond.
One resident, just two years into their home, found their upstairs bathroom sink nearly unusable. After scrubbing everything from under the sink to deep inside the wall, the drain was still sluggish.
It turns out the problem might be the often-overlooked condensation line from the air conditioning system. If it gets clogged, it can back up into the bathroom plumbing, depending on how your home is set up. In some houses, the bathroom and HVAC systems share drain lines; in others, they’re completely separate.
Others chimed in with similar experiences: black growth, brown sludge, and annual cleanouts just to keep things flowing.
The good news? Regular maintenance can help. Pouring a cup of bleach into your AC’s primary condensation drain every few months can prevent buildup. And if your secondary drain is dripping, that’s a sign the primary is already clogged.
If the DIY route doesn’t clear it, it might be time to call a plumber. Still, a little routine upkeep could save you from a messy surprise.
