The Benbrook Lady Bobcats looked like a different team after a sluggish start Tuesday night. The problem was that they couldn’t quite finish the comeback.
Opening district play on the road against Southwest, Benbrook struggled to find its rhythm early. Injuries, miscommunication, and inexperience have often shown this season as the Lady Raiders jumped on the Lady Bobcats for a 25-13 opening-set win.
Then Benbrook woke up.
The Lady Bobcats responded with back-to-back wins, taking the second set 25-19 before controlling the third, 25-16, to move within one set of opening district play with a victory.
However, Southwest had other plans. The Lady Raiders,13-4 on the season, answered with a 25-20 win in the fourth to force a deciding fifth set.
Benbrook stayed within striking distance, but mistakes at key moments kept the Lady Bobcats from taking control. Southwest closed out the match 15-11, handing Benbrook a five-set loss in its district opener.
The loss drops the Lady Bobcats to 14-13 overall and 0-1 in district play, with two straight losses after previously finding some momentum.
They will get their next chance Friday at home against Diamond Hill-Jarvis. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Benbrook Middle-High School gym.
