BENBROOK, TX – A routine proclamation to honor National Social Work Month turned into a heated debate at the Tarrant County Commissioners Court on March 11, as Republican officials moved to strip mentions of race, gender, immigration, and gun violence from the official statement.
Despite objections from social workers in attendance, the court voted along party lines to approve the amended version. Simmons later called the decision “disrespectful” and vowed to issue a separate proclamation with the original language.
