The Western Hills Cougars kicked off their 2025 season in style, earning a decisive 27-9 home victory over the North Side Steers on Saturday. The win carried extra weight, serving as payback for last year’s 35-20 loss to the Steers.
Quarterback Tyler Johnston set the tone with 102 passing yards and a touchdown, while his go-to target, Rodney Hill, put on a show with 91 total yards and two scores. Hill’s 41 receiving yards marked his best outing since September 2024.
The Cougar defense was just as dominant, tallying four sacks. Alexander Richmond led the charge with two of his own, making life tough for North Side’s quarterback.
Coaches also named standout players of the week: Johnston and Hill led the offense, Mauricio Martinez anchored the line, Cam’ron Carter shined on defense, and Jonathan Riveros sparked special teams. On the JV squad, Gilberto Vasquez earned top honors.
Western Hills now looks ahead to its first road test of the season, traveling to face Krum on Friday at 7 p.m. Cougar fans will be watching closely to see if the momentum carries over.
